RAD FESTIVAL & GALA PERFORMANCE - 31 MAY AND 1 JUNE 2008

On 31 May 2008, the Royal Academy of Dance held its annual RAD Festival. The Graduate College of Dance students excelled themselves receiving the following results:

14 years and Over Ensembles 'Type B' & 'Type C' Year 12 students 1st Place
The Gala Performance was held the following evening where recipients of various categories were invited to perform a solo and be presented with their awards. The College, together with John Curtin College of the Arts and WAAPA were invited to perform on the evening. The College performed the Snowflakes scene from The Nutcracker.

Daniel Smith, a 2003 graduate of the College, has recently joined the Hungarian National Ballet. He is seen here in a performance of Peter Breuer's Carmen with Salzburger Tanztheater Ballet Company on their recent European tour.


ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL - 19-30 JULY 2008

Jessica Cox, Sydney Gallagher, Emma Joubert and Keshia Ollivierre, pictured with Assistant Director Margaret Jones at the Perth International Airport, departed for London on Saturday, 19 July 2008. The students spent one week residing and training at The Royal Ballet School, White Lodge in Richmond Park followed by three days of sightseeing in London including attending a ballet performance of Swan Lake by the National Ballet China at Covent Garden.


NATALIE WEIR - 24 & 25 JUNE 2008

The students of The Graduate College of Dance had the privilege of working once again with renowned international choreographer, Natalie Weir, rehearsing her solo works commissioned by The Graduate College of Dance.


SALZBURG INTERNATIONAL DANCE ACADEMY SUMMER SCHOOL - YEARS 5-12 - 9 JULY TO 9 AUGUST 2008

The Salzburg International Dance Academy Summer School gives young dancers an incite into life as a professional dancer. This four week intensive training programme includes rehearsals and classes with the Salzburg Ballet Theater and four gala performances in Austria and Germany. Classes are taken by an international faculty from the USA, Brazil, Europe and Israel. Year 12 ­ Emma Cullen and Veronica Formentin, Year 10 ­ Paige Macliver and Bella Beattie and Year 11 ­ Ashleigh Smith all successfully auditioned for a place in the Summer School.


TIMOTHE AUDIN

Tim has now returned from his 4-weeks intensive training at the School of American Ballet's Summer School in New York. Tim is seen here in the studios of The Graduate College of Dance with Alex McKinnon, an ex-student of the College who is now in Level 6 of the Australian Ballet School. Tim will soon be joining Alex in Melbourne as he has been accepted by the Australian Ballet School for 2009.


FOUR STUDENTS ACCEPTED BY THE AUSTRALIAN BALLET SCHOOL FOR 2009

Kirby Selchow, Adam Alzaim, Rhianna Isard and Timothe Audin join eight other students of the College who have taken their places at Australia's national school.

MASTERCLASS WITH JANEK SCHERGEN - 13 SEPTEMBER 2008
The Graduate College of Dance was fortunate to have Janek Schergen, Director of the Singapore Dance Theatre as guest examiner for the College's 2008 Performance Examinations. Mr Schergen's professional career of over 30-years includes having danced for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and Washington Ballet, Ballet Master for the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Artistic Director of the Nashville Ballet, and Ballet Master and Staff Teacher of the Norwegian National Ballet in Oslo. He has also completed his studies in written dance notation in London, receiving his certification in Benesh Movement Notation. During his stay in Perth Mr Schergen kindly donated his time to conduct a Masterclass at The Graduate College of Dance. Students and teachers from various schools attended.

RAD'S 'AFTERNOON OF DANCE' - SUNDAY, 19 OCTOBER 2008
Afternoon Of Dance, held at The Graduate College of Dance, showcased three students who were selected by the RAD WA Advisory Panel to represent Western Australia in the 2008 Beijing International Ballet Invitational for Dance Schools. The students were Kirby Selchow, The Graduate College of Dance, Latisha Sparks, Gail Meade Performing Arts Centre and William Banks, Western Australian Academy of Performance Arts. These students were selected based on their outstanding performance at the RAD Festival on 31 May 2008. The Afternoon of Dance included performances from the students of The Graduate College of Dance, Gail Meade Performing Arts and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION – SATURDAY, 6 DECEMBER 2008
This year's graduation ceremony was held at the beautiful and historical Perth Town Hall. Congratulations to the nine graduating students - Moira Cotnoir, Emma Cullinan, Rebekha Duncan, Kylie Fipps, Veronica Formentin, Evelyn Kong, Jessica McKemmish, Jessica Rogerson and Samantha Ryan. The ceremony also farewelled four students accepted full-time into the Australian Ballet School - Year 9 - Adam Alzaim, Year 10 - Rhianna Isard and Kirby Selchow, and Year 11 - Timothe Audin.

BRANTLY-MARIE PHILPOT – THE AUSTRALIAN BURSARY (RAD) - 7 DECEMBER 2008 Brantley-Marie Philpot, Year 10 2008, represented Western Australia in Royal Academy of Dance’s The Australian Bursary. This was held in Sydney on 7 December 2008.

LA BAYADERE - 11-13 DECEMBER 2008 Venue: Quarry Amphitheatre Times: Thursday to Saturday 8:30-10:00 p.m. The Graduate College of Dance's end of year production was La Bayadere. The season was performed at the beautiful natural settings of the Quarry Amphitheatre, City Beach. Guest artists included former students Kristian Pisano, a 2006 graduate of the College and currently training at the New Zealand School of Dance, Tamsin Raistrick a 2005 graduate of who graduated from WAAPA this year in Production and Design, and Alexander McKinnon and Brodie James, both currently training at Australian Ballet School.

A.I.C.D. BALLET AWARDS - 28 SEPTEMBER 2007
The A.I.C.D. Ballet Awards is an annual dance competition open to local dance schools. Fourteen students from The Graduate College of Dance were entered in various categories. The College students did very well in the competition - Year 8 Category: 1st Liam Green, 2nd Keshia Ollivierre; Year 9 Category: 1st Adam Alzaim; Year 10 Category: 2nd Kirby Selchow. The adjudicators were Kasey Polkinghorne and Tim O'Donnel, Leading Artists of WA Ballet.

2008 CHOREOGRAPHIC SEASON - THURSDAY, 21 AUGUST, FRIDAY, 22 AUGUST + SATURDAY, 23 AUGUST
This year's theme was "Change - Quote of the Individual" - choreography inspired by words of wisdom. The Year 12 students organised all aspects of the event - staging, finance, administration and choreography. Four performances were held in Studio 1 over a three day period with students from Years 6-12 performing works they choreographed under the guidance and supervision of the Year 12 students.

THE GRADUATE COLLEGE OF DANCE ENDORSED BALLET PROGRAMME
The Curriculum Council have endorsed The Graduate College of Dance: Classical Ballet Year 10, The Graduate College of Dance: Classical Ballet Year 11 and The Graduate College of Dance: Classical Ballet Year 12. From 2009, students at The Graduate College of Dance completing these programs can count this learning towards their senior secondary graduation certificate – the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

CHAIRMAN ROLLS UP SLEEVES
The Chairman of The Graduate College of Dance, pictured with former graduate Tamsin Raistrick, laid the new floor mats at the purpose built studio at St Stephen's School, Carramar Campus. At the start of 2009, ballet and dance studies, administered by The Graduate College of Dance, for Years 7, 8 and 9 will relocate to the Carramar Campus.
